On the surface of it, the Codex is simply a safety standard for food, including vitamin and mineral supplements. However, since the government is currently considering how to adopt the Codex in Canada, it’s at the centre of controversy. Supporters say the Codex is simply a voluntary standard, while opponents say it is influenced by pharmaceutical companies and its guidelines for vitamin and mineral supplements are far too restrictive. For instance, it’s believed that the Codex may permit only ultra-low doses of supplements, and therapeutic-grade vitamins, minerals, and amino acids would be eliminated from the marketplace entirely. Dosages would be restricted by using toxicology to assess nutrients, instead of using biochemistry which is considered to be the correct science for assessing nutrients. As the government considers whether to adopt the Codex, the pharmaceutical industry is spending billions of dollars to present the Codex as “consumer protection” and suggest that natural health options may be “dangerous”—so people will use pharmaceuticals instead! If you want to ensure that you have continued access to the nutrition supplements you’re familiar with, write to your MP or visit the Health Canada website (hc-sc.gc.ca) to see how you can make your opinion known.
